About a mile and a half west of Paramount Studios, right next door to the legendary Formosa Cafe, is "The Lot,” an 18-acre Hollywood studio with a long and varied history. Founded in 1920 as Hampton Studios, The Lot was quickly bought by the first couple of Hollywood, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks and became known as the Pickford-Fairbanks Studios. Soon The Lot would be taken over by Pickford and Fairbanks’ expanding ventures with United Artists (founded in 1919 by Pickford, Fairbanks, Charlie Chaplin, and D.W. Griffith) and would become known as United Artists Studio. After renting property on The Lot, Samuel Goldwyn and Joseph Schenck teamed up with UA and financed the expansion of the studio, creating a new ownership structure which ultimately resulted in Goldwyn gaining soul ownership through a court battle with Mary Pickford in 1955 and then officially renaming The Lot the Samuel Goldwyn Studios. In 1980 Warner Bros. purchased the site as an auxiliary to its Burbank headquarters, and renamed it the Warner Hollywood Studio. After Warner sold the property to a private film company in 1999, it remained in operation with a new identity called The Lot.

The Lot has provided a home for many independent production companies over the years and is still used for filming both movies and television. Among the famous movies filmed there were Wuthering Heights, Some Like It Hot, West Side Story, Basic Instict, and The Green Mile. Stars who have worked there included Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Frank Sinatra, Natalie Wood, Marlon Brando, Susan Hayward, Jack Lemmon, Danny Kaye, Lucille Ball and Laurence Olivier.

In addition, the soundstages at The Lot have hosted many Oscar winners over the years including: Samuel Goldwyn Studio Sound Dept - Sound for In The Heat of the Night '67; SGSD/Todd AO S.D./Gordon E Sawyer Sound Director - Sound of West Side Story '61; SGSD/ Gordon E Sawyer Sound Dir/Todd AO S.D.
